Cleaning an acrylic display case is easy, but there is one important catch:
Acrylic should not be cleaned the same way you clean ordinary glass.
Some common household cleaners and cleaning methods can leave fine scratches, cause cloudiness, or damage the acrylic surface over time.

What Is the Best Way to Clean an Acrylic Display Case?
For routine cleaning, you really don't need anything complicated.
Use:
- Lukewarm water
- A small amount of mild dish soap
- A clean, soft microfiber cloth
- A second clean cloth for drying
That's it.
Acrylic does not require aggressive cleaners to remove normal dust and fingerprints.
In fact, gentler is usually better.
Step 1: Remove Loose Dust First
Before wiping your acrylic display case, look closely at the surface.
If there is visible dust or debris sitting on it, you do not want to immediately rub that material across the acrylic.
Small particles can act like an abrasive and create fine scratches.
Instead, lightly dampen a clean microfiber cloth and gently lift the dust away.

Step 4: Remove Soap Residue
Use another clean cloth dampened with plain water to remove any remaining soap residue.
This prevents streaks or soap film from remaining on the acrylic.

Step 5: Dry Carefully
Once the case is clean, use a clean, soft cloth to gently dry the surface.
You can also blot excess moisture rather than rubbing aggressively.
The less unnecessary friction applied to acrylic, the lower the chance of creating small surface marks over time.
Can You Use Glass Cleaner on Acrylic?
Generally, no.
Acrylic and glass may look similar, but they are very different materials.
Many household window-cleaning products are formulated for glass rather than plastic.
Acrylic manufacturers specifically caution against using ordinary window-cleaning sprays and certain harsh solvents because they may damage the surface.
That's why a simple mixture of mild soap and water is usually the safest choice for regular acrylic display case cleaning.

What Cleaners Should You Avoid on Acrylic?
When cleaning an acrylic case, avoid reaching for aggressive household cleaning chemicals unless the product specifically states that it is compatible with acrylic.

Why Does Acrylic Attract So Much Dust?
If you've ever cleaned an acrylic display only to watch dust seemingly return immediately, you're not imagining things.

For most collectors, cleaning the outside of the case whenever visible dust begins accumulating is enough.
A case sitting inside a closed cabinet may need very little attention.

Should You Remove the Collectible Before Cleaning?
For light exterior cleaning, usually not.

What If My Acrylic Case Already Has Small Scratches?
Fine surface scratches can sometimes be reduced using polishing compounds specifically designed for acrylic.

Aggressive polishing can potentially make a small problem much more noticeable.

Don't place keys, tools, coins, or other hard objects on top of the case.
Avoid sliding the display across rough surfaces.
When moving the case, pick it up rather than dragging it.
Keep rough cleaning materials away from it.
And when you do clean it, use a clean cloth.

Don't Forget the Surface Under the Case
Dust doesn't only collect on the acrylic.
It also accumulates underneath and around the display.
Occasionally lift the entire display and clean the shelf underneath it.
Picking the display up rather than sliding it prevents dust trapped underneath from being dragged against the acrylic.
This is particularly important with heavier cases and larger displays.
